It was a normal evening, or so she thought. A late shift at a department store meant a long, dark bus ride home. But this night, the usual quiet commute would turn into something far more frightening.
She was a college student, working to make ends meet. Getting home late on public transport wasn't ideal, especially with early morning classes. Her mom worried, but she tried to be independent. Little did she know, independence would be tested in the scariest way possible.
A Difficult Work Schedule
Her managers, unfortunately, weren't the most understanding. They assigned her a full week of closing shifts. This meant getting off work around 11 PM and not arriving home until 1 AM. The bus ride itself was two hours long, and her stop was in a neighborhood with no streetlights.
She was annoyed, to say the least. Missing out on sleep for an early class was bad enough. The thought of being alone on a dark bus stop that late at night was even worse. She never asked her mom for a ride, not wanting to bother her or her younger sisters.
The Unsettling Conversation
One particular night, the shift finally ended. She got on her usual bus, choosing a seat towards the back. With her iPod dead, she occupied herself with a game on her phone, earbuds in, trying to ignore the world.
That's when she heard them. Two men, speaking Spanish, were a couple of seats behind her. Her stepmother was Puerto Rican, so she understood a good amount of Spanish. She usually tried not to listen to other people's conversations, but then she heard something that made her freeze.
They mentioned "that black girl up there." Her ears immediately perked up. She kept her earbuds in, pretending not to hear, and listened closely.
A Plan Revealed
What they were saying was horrifying. They knew exactly where she got off the bus. Her stop was the second to last one before the bus returned to the terminal. While it was near the front of her neighborhood, it was completely dark and empty at that hour.
Their plan was chillingly simple. They intended to "snatch that piece of ass up." The words sent a wave of fear through her. She was still about 20 minutes away from her stop, and she knew she had to act fast.
A Race Against Time
Since they could see her, she continued to pretend to be engrossed in her phone. She needed to contact her mom without drawing attention. She started texting, hoping her mom would see the message and understand the urgency.
