The train was shut down for hours. Stuck far from home with no way to get back, a group of strangers decided to share a taxi. It seemed like a good idea at first, a way to split the cost and get everyone home. But as the miles ticked by, the ride became a nightmare.
Plans change. One woman decided to stay with her mother, leaving fewer people to share the ride. Then, another person in the group shifted the seating. These small changes felt uneasy, a sign of things to come.
The Uncomfortable Beginning
The taxi pulled up, and the group started to sort out who would sit where. One woman, let's call her Lisa, was a bit tipsy. She was traveling with a man named Kyle, who was extremely drunk. He was already making uncomfortable comments, which put some people on edge.
Another man, John, joined the group. He said he had just moved to the city and was picking up his things after a breakup. The final arrangement had Kyle in the front seat, the narrator next to the window, and Lisa in the middle. This seating was meant to keep things comfortable.
When John got into the taxi, he opened the door on the narrator's side. He just stared for a moment. Lisa then asked him to sit on the other side, wanting the middle seat to talk to Kyle more easily. John seemed annoyed but moved.
Red
Flags and Awkward Encounters
The ride started awkwardly. Lisa and Kyle were drunk and started airing their personal issues. It became clear they were more than just friends. Lisa then announced she desperately needed to use the restroom.
The taxi driver pulled over at a leisure center. Lisa got out to go inside. The narrator regretted not going with her, but it was cold outside and she didn't think much of it at the time. Kyle and John went outside to smoke.
When Lisa returned, John got back into the taxi. He then scooted over to the middle seat. To the narrator's shock, he placed his hand on her upper thigh, resting it there. She froze, regretting not speaking up.
"Woman to woman, I'll make sure you get home safely."
Lisa saw John's hand on the narrator's thigh. She quickly asked John to switch seats, saying she loved the middle. John looked angry. He removed his hand from the narrator's leg and moved. Lisa then got in next to the narrator, and John sat in his original seat.
A Promise of Safety
Once settled, Lisa took the narrator's hand. She whispered, "Woman to woman, I'll make sure you get home safely." The narrator was moved to tears and thanked her. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot in that tense situation.
