It started with a simple alert from a baby monitor in the middle of the night. For a nurse working the night shift, it was a common enough occurrence. His three-year-old son might have coughed or stirred. But what he saw on his phone screen was anything but common.
He saw his wife and son sitting on the bed in the child's room. He assumed his son had woken up scared and come to his mother. It seemed normal enough, until he looked closer.
The Unsettling Stare
As he was about to close the app, a chilling detail caught his eye. His wife and son were sitting perfectly still, both staring directly up at the camera. Their eyes, in the black and white night vision, looked eerily white and vacant. They didn't move except for their breathing. It was a deeply unsettling sight.
He decided to call his wife to make sure everything was okay. It was rare for him to call home during his shift, but this felt different. He needed to know what was happening.
When she answered, her voice was groggy, as if she had been fast asleep. This was strange, because he had just seen her wide awake and staring at the camera.
"Hey. You guys okay?" he asked.
"Huh? Yeah. Buddy came in like 15 minutes ago. Seemed scared so I said he could sleep with mama," she replied, sounding sleepy.
This confused him. He had seen them in their son's room just moments before. How could they be in bed now?
A Disturbing Confirmation
"Wait, so you guys are in bed?" he asked, trying to keep his voice calm.
"Yeah, I fell back asleep right away. Everything okay? Everybody keeps waking me up," she said, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
He asked her to hold on and put her on speakerphone. He opened the camera app again, his stomach twisting with dread. There they were, his wife and son, sitting on the son's bed, staring blankly at the camera.
"Hello?" he said into the phone.
"You guys are in bed, right?" he asked.
"Yeah, we're trying to sleep," she replied.
"Well, I'm looking at his camera and I see you two sitting on his bed."
"Huh? No. We're in our bed," she insisted.
"I know that's what you mean, but I'm looking at his bed and you two are in there."
There was a pause. Then, a sound unlike anything he had ever heard from his wife. A deep, guttural gasp of pure terror. It was the sound of someone who had just seen something truly horrifying.
"Hang on," she said. He heard rustling, and then the call went dead.
The Longest Four Minutes
Panic set in. He called her back immediately, but it went straight to voicemail. He called again, and again. Each unanswered call stretched into an eternity. Those four minutes felt like forty years.
Finally, his wife called him back. She was hysterical, sobbing uncontrollably. It took him a moment to calm her down enough to understand.
They were in the car, driving to her parents' house. She explained that when she saw what was on the camera, she had grabbed their son and run out of the house. She didn't even stop to close the garage door.
He told her not to worry about the garage, that he would handle it when he got off work. But she was adamant.
"You will not go in there!" she exclaimed.
"Hell no," he agreed. "Why are we on the camera? Is it a recording?"
"I don't know," he replied. "I'm gonna keep watching it and see if there's anything I can tell. Do our code words with Buddy."
Code
Words and Unsettling Truths
They had developed code words years ago, a silly precaution born from watching too many sci-fi movies about impostors. They had a few phrases and a short story they would recite together, taking turns saying parts of it. It was a joke, something they never thought they'd actually need.
He listened as his wife began the recitation with their son. He heard his son giggle, thinking it was just a funny game. But when his wife spoke her part, he felt a surge of relief. They sounded like themselves. He was convinced their son was their son, and his wife was his wife.
