It started like many young adult stories. After high school, finding a place to live felt impossible. Kicked out by a guardian, the car became a temporary home for a few months. Then, an offer came from some local guys who were in a band. They seemed like good people, and everyone knew them. They offered a place to stay, rent-free. It seemed like a lucky break, but looking back now, staying in the car might have been safer.
My two main roommates were brothers, Andrew and Seth. They were into the occult, and while I didn't really believe in that stuff, I respected their beliefs. They let me live with them for free for months, so I didn't complain. Being the only woman in a house full of young men, I always felt a little on edge. It turns out my gut feeling was right to be worried.
Things got more crowded when their friends started staying for longer periods. These were another set of brothers, friends from school. Five brothers in total, but two of them, Mark and Adam, became regular visitors. Mark was the polite one. He kept to himself, cleaned up, and helped out. Adam, however, was a different story.
Adam had serious issues. He'd apparently done bad drugs years ago, which seemed to have led to some kind of religious psychosis. He'd even been to prison for assaulting a woman with a bible. He had a disturbing habit of looking people in the eye and describing how they would die. One time, he told me I was possessed by a demon and needed my soul cleansed. It was terrifying.
Everyone in the house knew Adam had these problems. They were trying to help him, giving him a place to stay when he had nowhere else to go. I tried to stay on guard around him, but no one else seemed as worried as I was. They should have been.
A Normal Morning Turns Deadly
One afternoon, I was sleeping when my phone rang. It was my boss. He asked if I could come into work an hour early. It was only noon, I was broke, and had nothing else planned. So, I said yes.
I got up and started getting ready to leave. As I walked into the living room, I saw Mark and Andrew on the couch. Adam was sitting on the floor by the TV, watching religious videos on YouTube. It was pretty normal for him, so I just said goodbye and headed out to work.
My shift was almost over when the phone rang again. My boss handed it to me. "For you," he said. I figured it was a friend who couldn't reach me on my cell.
A Shocking Phone Call
I answered the phone and heard a man's voice I didn't recognize. "Hi, this is Detective Williams," he said. "Something happened at your apartment today, and we need you to come to the station to talk about it."
I left work immediately. My mind raced. I assumed one of the brothers had been arrested for something minor, like drugs. I was so wrong.
