My brother-in-law served in the English army for years, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His mom always worried, but he never expected his scariest moment to happen back home, right in the heart of London.
He told me this story exactly how it happened to him two years ago. He seemed very genuine, and honestly, after everything I’ve heard, I believe him. Now, you can be the judge.
Life as a Queen's Guard: More Than
Just a Hat
After his third tour, the army gave him an award. Surviving battles in mountains was apparently a good enough reason for honor. They offered him a spot in the Queen’s Guard, which is a big deal in England. He hated it though.
He was stuck at home, standing still in front of buildings while tourists tried to make him laugh. He wanted out, but his mom was happy he wasn't in danger anymore. So, he had to do it, wishing he was back in a cave in Kabul.
He worked shifts at the Tower of London a few times a week, usually two to three hours long. The job got old fast. Drunk people and annoying tourists were always trying to get a reaction out of him. He just shut up and did his job.
The Pale Woman Who Wouldn't Look Away
One day in 2012, his shift started like any other. Some French guys tried to bother him, then a group of loud Russian women passed by. The sun was hot, and his hat felt heavy. Then a large group of tourists arrived, likely on a guided tour.
They all took pictures and made jokes, wearing matching Big Ben tour shirts. But one woman stood out. She was in the back, just staring at him. She looked good, maybe early forties, with dark, long hair and pale skin, making him think she was English.
After the group moved on, the pale woman stayed. She kept watching him. He had seen people do all sorts of strange things, but this was new. She was committed. Two hours and hundreds of tourists later, she was still in the same spot, just staring.
She wasn't smiling, which was odd because he thought she was trying to get a reaction. The crowd slowly thinned, and she took a slow step towards him. Then another. He thought a joke was coming as she moved closer.
An Unnatural Encounter
She stopped about two feet away, looking straight into his eyes. She tilted her head left, then right. He first thought she was trying to make him laugh. But then he realized she wasn't joking around. She started leaning towards him, still two feet away.
There was something wrong with her movements that made him very uneasy. She never broke eye contact. She kept leaning without moving her feet, stopping just shy of touching his face. Her position looked unnatural. Her head began to shake slowly, like someone cold after a shower.
Then, she truly scared him. He had faced screaming people and even a fight, but this was much worse. She opened her mouth wide, as if to let out a loud scream, but nothing came out. She just stood there, leaning at a strange angle, inches from his face, making a silent scream. Her shaking got faster.
He felt cold, and goosebumps rose under his uniform despite the heat. He pulled himself together and began marching away, which guards are allowed to do for ten steps occasionally. He just wanted her to be gone when he turned around.
The Silent Pursuit: She Was Always There
When he reached the end of his path, he stopped and closed his eyes. He hoped she would be gone. As he turned 180 degrees, he froze. She was right in front of him, leaning all the way to his face, mouth open even wider, head shaking wildly. He was so shocked he couldn't react.
Noise and yelling he could handle, but this silent, creepy behavior was truly frightening. He yelled, *“Make way for the Queen’s Guard!”
- Guards are allowed to say this when someone is blocking them. She didn't react, but leaned even closer, about an inch from his face.
He yelled, “MAKE WAY FOR THE QUEEN’S GUARD!” even louder, hoping his voice wouldn't crack. She completely ignored his orders. Tired of the situation, he stepped back and pointed his bayonet at her. This was a last resort for difficult tourists.
She immediately closed her mouth and stood upright. He didn't wait to see what she would do next, so he marched around her. When he got back to his post, he turned and stood still. He couldn't see her in his peripheral vision, which brought great relief. “This job,” he thought, “I need to look into something else.”
“10, 9, 8,” someone whispered in his right ear. It had to be her. She was behind him.
“10, 9, 8,” whispers came from his left side. His goosebumps were now fully erect. He, a combat veteran who had seen awful things, was terrified of this crazy tourist lady. It was absurd.
“10, 9, 8, 10, 9, 8, 10, 9, 8,” she sped up her whispering. Then she walked in front of him. “10, 9, 8, 10, 9, 8,” she whispered incredibly fast. It was more like yelling in a whisper tone, a surreal sound. She leaned towards his face again, whispering those numbers frantically.
He was about to break his orders. He couldn't take it anymore. There was something deeply wrong with this woman, and he couldn't deal with it. “Ma’m,” he spoke, his voice shaky, “Ma’m will you please step…”
