I (a pizza guy) intercepted a kidnapping during a delivery

It was a scorching hot night, the kind where the heat wave just doesn't quit even after the sun goes down. For a pizza delivery driver, this meant a non-stop rush of orders and a desperate need for a bathroom break that just wouldn't come.

He was driving to a customer's house, already feeling the intense urge to go, when he pulled up to the address. But something felt off. The house was dark, no lights on at all. This was unusual for a busy university area, especially on a warm evening. The nearest streetlight was also out, making the street eerily quiet.

A Strange Delivery Call

He decided to call the customer to make sure they were home before getting out of his car. The air conditioning in his car was weak, and he didn't want to open the door more than necessary. When the customer finally answered, their voice was rushed and out of breath.

"Yah?" the voice said.

"Hey, it's your pizza out front but there doesn't appear to be anybody home?" the driver asked.

"Yah, I'm not home," came the reply. The driver, desperate to find a place to relieve himself and annoyed by the customer's response, almost ended the order.

But then the voice on the other end became clearer. It was a young woman, sounding very upset and apologetic. She explained she was running home from work and had just taken out her earbuds.

"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry I was running down the street so I could barely hear you!" she cried. "Is that better? Sorry, I completely lost track of time at work, but I knew you were coming, that's why I'm literally *running

  • home right now. Please don't leave, I'm starving and I don't have a car. Seriously, please don't leave. Five minutes tops, ok?"

The driver felt a pang of guilt. He knew what it was like to be in that situation. He told her not to worry and to take her time, while he desperately looked for a place to finally use the restroom.

An Unexpected Encounter

With no private spots in sight, the driver decided the best, albeit risky, option was to use a large bush in front of the woman's house. It was dark, the street light was out, and he figured no one would see him. He scurried over to the biggest cluster of bushes, about four feet from the front door.

As he was relieving himself, he noticed the sound was wrong. It wasn't hitting leaves like he expected, but something solid. Before he could even process this, a deep voice exclaimed from the bushes, "What the fuck?"

Suddenly, a man leaped out of the bushes, brushing past the driver. The man was wearing a hoodie despite the extreme heat. He quickly ran off down the street, and the driver heard a car screech away shortly after.

Investigating the Bushes

The driver was frozen in shock. His mind struggled to accept what had just happened. He thought maybe the bushes led to a backyard or an open window, but a voice in his head screamed that the man in the hoodie was trouble.

Against his better judgment, he approached the bushes to see if he could find a logical explanation. He shined his phone flashlight around the shrubbery. That's when he saw it: a tattered drawstring bag.

Curiosity, or perhaps a desperate need for answers, led him to pick up the bag. It was slightly wet from his earlier actions. He opened it to find a sharp knife, a roll of duct tape, and a bottle of pills.

The

Realization and Escape

The contents of the bag shattered any remaining delusions. This was not a misunderstanding. The reality of the situation hit him with full force, triggering a surge of adrenaline and self-preservation instincts.

He dropped the bag and ran back to his car as fast as he could. He sped away, not even closing the car door completely, until he reached a red light. He pulled over into a 24-hour drugstore parking lot, his hands shaking, to collect himself.

Making the Call

His mind raced. Should he call the police first, or the young woman? He knew she was on her way home, and she was unaware of the danger lurking in the bushes. He decided she needed to know immediately.

As he dialed her number, a terrifying thought crossed his mind: What if the girl on the phone was a decoy? What if she wasn't real, and this was a setup to rob him or worse? Remembering stories he'd heard, he decided it was safer to contact the authorities first.

He called

  1. The operator calmly guided him, but the driver was a wreck, trying to explain the chaotic sequence of events. He was worried the police wouldn't get there in time.

"You've got to save this girl because he wasn't after me I was just delivering a pizza. Unless they were after me, in which case there might not be a girl, but I talked to one on the phone, so then you should find that girl because they used her to lure me there. But if she's real she doesn't know about the guy, who was also real, and there could be more guys if there's actually a girl, and you know what? Even if there isn't a girl there might actually be more guys. I only checked one part of the bushes so I don't actually know. But we'll know which guy is the one I saw because I pissed all over him, you know."

The 911 operator asked him to stay on the line. Then, an incoming call from the customer. She texted, "Hey I'm here, don't see you?"

A Race Against Time

He told 911 the girl had arrived, and officers were minutes away. But guilt washed over him. His rational mind told him the odds of her being a victim were much higher than her being part of a scam.

He put his 911 call on mute and drove back to the area, his heart pounding. He saw the young woman walking down the street, looking for his car. He flashed his headlights and waved her over.

She came up to his window, seemingly cheerful. He quickly and urgently explained the situation: "There was a man in your bushes. I'm on the phone with the police. I don't know where he is right now. Please get in the car so we can lock the doors."

She looked confused at first, but the urgency in his voice finally got through. As she was about to get in, police sirens wailed in the distance, growing closer.

The Aftermath

Police arrived and secured the scene. They found the bag with the knife, tape, and pills. The man who had been hiding in the bushes was gone, but the evidence was clear. The young woman was safe, and the pizza delivery driver's quick thinking and bravery had likely prevented a serious crime.

He never did get to finish his delivery that night, but he left with a story far more impactful than any pizza. It was a stark reminder that even the most ordinary moments can hide extraordinary danger, and that sometimes, help comes from the most unexpected places.
