The woods behind a rural Virginia home seemed like an endless playground for a 10-year-old girl. One summer day, she and her best friend discovered a perfect spot for adventures: a wide, deep creek with mossy banks. It was an ideal place for swimming and spending long afternoons.
They planned a full day at the creek, packing a lunch for a picnic. The next day, they headed back into the familiar woods, eager for their watery escape. However, the deer trail they thought they knew led them somewhere unexpected.
A Wrong
Turn and a Strange Clearing
Instead of the creek, the girls found themselves in a small clearing filled with tall, thick ferns. They had never seen this spot before. Since they were already hungry and tired from walking, they decided to eat their picnic lunch right there. They spent time laughing and enjoying their meal, spitting watermelon seeds and feeling happy.
Their cheerful mood shifted as soon as they packed up to find the creek again. The woods began to feel different, darker and colder. A sense of unease crept in, and one of the girls kept looking behind them, sensing something was off.
Bigfoot's
Bathroom and Growing Fear
After about thirty minutes of walking, they stumbled upon a bizarre sight: an entire overgrown bathroom set. A sink, a toilet, and a bathtub were all sitting together, covered in ivy. Finding odd things in the woods wasn't entirely new, so they made jokes, calling it "Bigfoot's Bathroom," trying to lighten the mood.
But as another hour passed without them recognizing anything, real panic set in. Their goal changed from finding the creek to simply finding their way back home, or at least out of the woods. The familiar paths seemed to have vanished.
A Stubborn Split
As fear grew, so did the tension between the two friends. The narrator suggested following the sun, believing it would lead them to a road or someone's property. Her friend insisted on a different direction. Their disagreement escalated into a shouting match born of fear and childish stubbornness.
In a moment of frustration, the narrator told her friend to go her own way, and they would see who got out first. They split up, a decision the narrator later recognized as a terrible and dangerous mistake.
The Unseen Follower
Not long after parting ways, the narrator heard footsteps behind her. She assumed it was her friend catching up. She slowed down, but the footsteps matched her pace. When she stopped, the footsteps stopped too. This continued for what felt like hours.
Was it her imagination, or was something really there? She grabbed a sturdy stick, checking its strength, and kept walking, her mind racing. The woods felt increasingly menacing.
A Circle of Despair
As darkness began to fall, the narrator saw something that made her heart sink. It was "Bigfoot's Bathroom" again. She had walked in a *huge circle
- for hours, despite being certain she was walking west, following the setting sun. Disbelief and frustration washed over her.
