It started with a small, annoying sound. It ended with a full-blown investigation that brought in national security. This is the story of a prank gone terribly wrong.
One loans officer, who loved a good laugh, decided to spice up his rural Canadian bank job with a bit of fun. He had no idea his attempt at humor would trigger a panic and put his entire career on the line.
The Annoy-a-Tron Prank
The loans officer, who prefers to keep his name private, worked at a small bank in Canada. While he was good at his job, he felt like a square peg in a round hole. He loved quirky gadgets and often bought items from a popular online store called ThinkGeek.
One Christmas, his kids gifted him a "Annoy-a-Tron." This small device was designed to emit faint, random beeping noises for months on end. The idea was to hide it and drive coworkers slowly mad with the mysterious sounds. The product description even boasted about the fun of watching people search for it.
A Monday Morning Surprise
Thinking it would be a harmless bit of fun, the loans officer decided to put the Annoy-a-Tron to the test. He came into the office early one Monday and hid the device behind a metal poster frame in a coworker's office. He flipped the switch, expecting some giggles later that week.
But nothing happened. Monday passed, then Tuesday. By Wednesday and Thursday, the officer figured the device was broken. He even forgot about it for a while, especially since he had Friday off.
The Unexpected Conference Call
The following Monday started like any other. But as soon as everyone arrived, the branch manager called an unscheduled meeting for all 16 employees. The loans officer found himself standing near the back of the room as the call began.
The district Vice President (VP) joined the call, followed by the company's head of security. This immediately struck the officer as very unusual. Something was clearly wrong.
"The Device" is Found
The VP then dropped a bombshell. "By now," she said, "some of you know about the device that was found at your branch last week."
The loans officer's blood ran cold. He immediately suspected his prank. He realized the "device" they were talking about was likely his Annoy-a-Tron.
He listened in horror as the VP explained the situation. When the mysterious object was found on Thursday, no one knew what it was. Pictures were sent up the chain of command, eventually reaching the head of security.
