The Term "Bug" Predates Computers
Here is where the famous story starts to fall apart. The word "bug" was used to describe a problem or defect in machinery or engineering long before electronic computers even existed. Inventors and engineers were using this term for decades, even centuries, before Grace Hopper's time.
One of the most famous early uses comes from Thomas Edison. In an 1878 letter, he wrote about difficulties with his inventions. He mentioned, "It has been just so in all of my inventions.
