Imagine a world where aliens finally visit. They’ve traveled light-years, seen wonders we can’t dream of. They’re here to learn about us, to understand humanity. Everything seems peaceful, maybe even a little boring. Then, they ask about time.
And suddenly, things get complicated. Explaining why we have seven days in a week, why some months have 30 days and others 31, and why February is so short, might be the hardest part of first contact. It’s a bizarre thought, but it highlights just how strange our everyday systems can be.

Problem of Human Timekeeping
We take our calendar for granted. It’s just how things are. But when you really look at it, our system for tracking days, weeks, months, and years is a mess. It’s a patchwork of history, religion, and compromise that doesn’t make much logical sense.
Think about it. We have 12 months, but they aren’t equal. Some are longer, some shorter. And the number of days in a week, seven, seems to come out of nowhere. It doesn’t neatly divide into the number of days in a month or a year. It’s a human invention, not a natural law.

But from a purely mathematical or astronomical standpoint, it’s arbitrary. It doesn't fit perfectly with the roughly 29.5 days of a lunar cycle or the 365.25 days of a solar year.

The different lengths of our months are another source of confusion. Why does January have 31 days, but February only has 28 (or 29)? The story goes back to Roman emperors. Augustus Caesar supposedly wanted his month, August, to have the same number of days as Julius Caesar's month, July. So, August got 31 days, and to make space, February lost a day.
This is a simplification, but it shows how political and personal decisions shaped our timekeeping. It wasn't about creating a perfect, logical system. It was about fitting things together as best as people could, given their historical context and needs.
Leap Years: A Necessary Evil
To fix the fact that a year isn't exactly 365 days, we have leap years. The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the sun. Our 365-day year is slightly too short. Without leap years, the seasons would slowly drift. Summer would eventually happen in what we now call winter.
So, we add an extra day to February every four years. This makes our calendar more accurate. But it's still not perfect. The Gregorian calendar has rules to skip leap years in most centennial years (like 1900 or 2100) to get even closer to the true solar year. It's a complicated fix for a complicated problem.
What Aliens Might Think
An alien civilization, likely with a much more advanced understanding of mathematics and physics, might look at our calendar and be utterly baffled. They might expect a system based on pure logic or natural cycles, not one filled with historical quirks and compromises.
They might ask: Why seven days? Why these month lengths? Why a leap year system that seems like a workaround? They might see our calendar as a symbol of human irrationality, or perhaps, as a strange but charming artifact of our development.

Perhaps the alien confusion is the point. Our calendar, with all its imperfections, is deeply human. It’s a reflection of our history, our beliefs, and our struggles to understand the universe. It’s not a perfect scientific instrument, but it’s ours.
