The virus in question is the Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV. You've probably heard of it, though you might not know its name. EBV is incredibly common. Most people get infected with it at some point in their lives, often without even realizing it.
EBV is famous for causing mononucleosis, or "mono," the "kissing disease." Symptoms of mono can include fever, sore throat, and extreme tiredness. But even after you recover from mono, EBV stays in your body for life, usually hiding quietly in certain cells.
For a long time, EBV was just seen as a common, mostly harmless virus. However, studies have shown a strong connection between having had EBV and developing MS later on. This connection seemed too strong to be a simple coincidence.
Connecting the Dots: From Virus to Disease

How Does EBV Trigger MS?

Myelin acts like insulation for the nerves. It helps signals travel quickly and smoothly. In MS, the immune system damages or destroys patches of myelin. This damage, called lesions, disrupts the flow of information between the brain and the rest of the body.
