Every week, millions of us dutifully sort our plastic waste. We rinse out containers, separate bottles, and place them in the blue bin, feeling good about doing our part for the planet. It is a simple ritual, one that has been taught to us for decades.
We believe our efforts lead to new products, a cleaner environment, and less waste. But what if this belief, this hopeful ritual, is largely a myth? What if much of that plastic you carefully sort never actually gets recycled at all?

The reality is much grimmer than most people imagine. Despite our best intentions, a large amount of plastic collected for recycling in the United States ends up in landfills. This is not a small percentage, either. We are talking about the majority of plastic materials.
For years, we have been led to believe in a robust system. The truth is that the system for plastic recycling is deeply flawed. Many plastics cannot be recycled economically or practically, and the infrastructure to do so is often lacking.
A Flawed System

The story of plastic recycling really began in the 1970s and 80s. Plastic manufacturers started promoting recycling as a solution to plastic waste. They wanted to keep selling more plastic products without facing strong regulations.
However, internal documents from these companies show they knew plastic recycling was not truly viable on a large scale. They understood it was often too expensive and too difficult to process most types of plastic. Yet, the public campaign for recycling continued, creating a powerful image of a working solution.
The Numbers Don't Lie
Experts now estimate that the actual recycling rate for plastic in the US is very low, often in the single digits. This means for every ten plastic items you put in your recycling bin, perhaps only one or two, if any, get turned into something new. The rest becomes trash.

Not All Plastics Are Created Equal
If you look at the bottom of a plastic container, you will often see a number inside a chasing-arrows symbol. This symbol is often mistaken to mean the item is recyclable. In reality, it just identifies the type of plastic resin used.
- Numbers 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE): These are the most commonly recycled plastics. Think soda bottles, milk jugs, and detergent containers. They have established markets and are easier to process.
- Numbers 3-7: These plastics, like PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and "other" plastics, are much harder to recycle. They are often not accepted by local recycling programs due to cost, difficulty in sorting, and lack of demand for the recycled material.
Many recycling centers simply do not have the technology or the buyers for these harder-to-process plastics. So, even if you put them in your bin, they are likely sorted out and sent to the landfill.

Problem of Contamination and Cost
Recycling is not just about sorting plastic types. Contamination is a huge issue. A plastic container with food residue, like a greasy pizza box or a yogurt cup that was not rinsed, can contaminate an entire batch of otherwise recyclable materials.
When a batch is contaminated, it can be rejected by the processing plant, meaning all those perfectly good plastics mixed in also go to the landfill. This makes the sorting process even more complex and costly.
