Have you ever felt a connection so strong it seemed to defy time itself? Sometimes, the universe sends us messages in ways we can't explain. This is the story of a father's lowest point and a voice that reached him across decades.
It started with a conversation about the past. My dad was sharing stories from his university days. He came from very little, with a tough upbringing and attending a less-than-ideal school. When it was time for college, his grandfather passed away, leaving my dad, as the oldest son, to care for the rest of the family.
He chose a major based on bad advice, a choice he still regrets. The classes were taught in English, a language he wasn't fluent in. He described this period as the darkest time of his life, a time when he felt like running away and even thought about ending it all. Yet, recently, at 55 years old, he earned his Master's degree in English Literature, something he never thought possible.
A Journey to Help Family
The next day, my dad had to drive to a town three hours away. His distant relatives live there and were facing financial struggles. My dad, being incredibly kind, wanted to help them out. He usually takes public transport, but due to recent issues, he decided to drive himself.
My mom was worried, so we planned to call him every hour to check in. I decided to make the first call. It's important to know that cell phone signals can be very weak on the highway. My dad told me he'd pull over at a nearby restaurant, a common stop for truckers, to talk.
An Unexplained
Outburst of Emotion
As we talked, I don't know what came over me. I started crying. I told him how incredibly proud I was of him. I just kept babbling, telling him he shouldn't feel like he was lacking in any way. I expressed that he was an amazing father and a great person to look up to.
My dad started crying too. He said he'd talk to me when he got back home. When he returned, he just hugged me. He then told me something that took my breath away.
A Voice From Three Decades Ago
He said that about 30 years ago, he was visiting the same town. It was during that same difficult period in his life. He was visiting the same relatives. He was on a bus that stopped at a gas station.
He decided to call his mother. But here's the unbelievable part: he picked up the phone, and without even dialing, he heard my voice. It was me, saying the exact same words I had just said to him yesterday.
He said he didn't even call his grandmother. He just stood there, phone in hand, and cried. That moment gave him the strength to keep fighting.
He stood there, stunned, not having made the call to his mother. He just heard my voice, a voice from the future, offering the exact same comfort and pride I had expressed yesterday. He said he only realized now, after all these years, that it was me whose voice he had heard.
