Because of this, Google had been hesitant to fully embrace HEVC. They wanted a world where developers and content creators didn't have to worry about licensing fees just to show video on the web. This stance made their eventual decision to support HEVC in Chrome even more surprising to some.
The Quiet Shift: Chrome Gets HEVC Support
Then, the news broke. Google Chrome would begin supporting HEVC. This wasn't a universal rollout where Chrome suddenly built in HEVC decoding for all platforms. Instead, it was a more subtle, yet powerful, change.
